From Nkhata Bay:
The Ilala-Ferry leaves Nkhata Bay on Sundays 5 am (arrival in Usisya 8 am) and returns on Mondays around 9.30 am. You can board the ferry on Saturday evening already, enjoy a night under the stars or get a cabin.
The Fumbani local-boat leaves Nkhata Bay on Wednesdays 8 am and returns on Fridays around 9 am. The journey takes approximately 5 hours. Take water, food and sunscreen with you.
A lot of other local boats travel between Nkhata Bay and Usisya on a non-fixed schedule, but usually in the morning, just ask at the harbour in Nkhata Bay.
Privat boats can be hired and cost around 100000mk.
Kayak trips can be organised by Monkey Business in Nkhata Bay.

There is a beautiful road through the North Viphya mountains to Usisya which you can travel either by your own high clearance car or using local matolas which leave Mzuzu every day at 11am from outside Chenda Hotel. (gps: S 11°14'22.739" E 34°13'56.545")

The Ilala-Ferry leaves Chilumba on Mondays 2.30 am / Mlowe 5.30 am and arrives in Usisya 9.30 am.
From Livingstonia:
If you are looking for a challenging but very rewarding guided hike from Livingstonia to Usisya, it can be arranged through Lukwe Camp or Mushroom Farm.
From Ruarwe:
The Ilala-Ferry leaves Ruarwe on Mondays 7 am, the Fumbani boat leaves on Fridays around 7 am, boats and dugout canoes can be hired or you simply enjoy a 6-7 hours hike, leading you trough remote little villages along the beautiful lake shore.
